Square Breathing (Box Breathing)

Square breathing, also known as box breathing, is a simple rhythm with four equalsides: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, and hold again for 4. Picture tracing the four sides of a square, one side per step. The pattern is widely taught in stress-management programs and is popular with athletes, first responders, and military teams as a quick way to steady themselves under pressure.

The equal counts give your mind something concrete to follow, which is part of what makes it so approachable. Instead of trying to "calm down" in the abstract, you're just counting to four. Many people find that a couple of minutes of this steady rhythm helps them feel more settled and focused, especially before a stressful moment like a presentation, a difficult conversation, or a test.

This guided version runs 8 full cycles, a little over two minutes. Follow the circle as it expands while you breathe in, pauses while you hold, and contracts as you breathe out. Breathe through your nose if that's comfortable, and let your shoulders relax. You can pause or stop at any time.

Stop and breathe normally if you feel dizzy or lightheaded.
