4-7-8 Breathing Exercise
4 cycles · ≈ 1:16
The 4-7-8 technique is a relaxing breath pattern adapted from traditional yogic breathing practices: breathe in quietly for 4 seconds, hold for 7, then exhale slowly for a full 8 seconds. The long, unhurried exhale is the heart of the exercise. It naturally slows your breathing rate, and many people find it settling in a way that shorter breaths aren't.
4-7-8 is often used as a wind-down ritual: before bed, after a tense conversation, or any time your thoughts are racing. Because the holds and exhales are long, it's a slightly more advanced pattern than square or coherent breathing. If it feels like a strain at first, that's normal. The counts get easier with practice, and there's no prize for forcing it. Adjusting to a gentler pace while you learn is completely fine.
This guided version runs the standard beginner dose: 4 cycles, about 75 seconds. Sit comfortably, ideally with your back supported, and exhale through your mouth with a soft whoosh if you like. Feeling a little lightheaded is common when you're new to this pattern; it usually passes, and stopping to breathe normally is always okay.
Stop and breathe normally if you feel dizzy or lightheaded.
